Children of morta gameplay7/11/2023 ![]() Overall, CoM was a difficult start for me as I struggled to defeat early enemies, however I became more engrossed as I played and loved it and can easily recommend the game to most gamers. The last two levels in particular of CoM are very mechanical both in theme and in practice, so it's good the game didn't outstay its welcome, however there are NG+ options for those who really enjoy this. The game itself I think is just about the right length, as this avoids inane repetition. Each character has skills that benefit the whole family and this gives you an incentive to play as each character. Children of Morta is a story-driven hack n slash roguelike game which will involve you in the adventures of the Bergson family. What sets CoM above similar titles for me is that with each death or completed mission you can retain your money and experience points, therefore having a tangible progression, making each playthrough more beneficial than the last. Linda is ranged whilst John is melee, with Joey being slower and more methodical, but I shall not elaborate further to avoid spoilers. Their play styles require different tactics from the player that makes each character feel truly different and not just a different flavour of the same meal. Having over half a dozen characters risks creating repetition in any game, yet CoM does a fantastic job of creating individual identities for every character. The gameplay is the bread and butter of CoM and by far the most memorable aspect. Overall, CoM is a game I will always remember and recognise from a simple screenshot. There is definitely some repetition as the purple enemies come more often than I would like, but this is offset by gaining experience from their downfall. Enemy attacks can be limited as they are regardless of budgets, yet I never found myself experiencing the dreaded colour palette swaps so prominent in games of this genre. This is all due to the powerful narrative voice that single-handedly conveys the significance of each element of the story.
